Biomedical Writing Minor

This minor is administered by the Department of English .

(23-24 credits plus a 1-3 credit recommended internship).

Designed for students in good academic standing who already have a major or minor in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Physics, Clinical Laboratory Science, or any other health-related majors or minors. The Biomedical Writing Minor will help you acquire (a) proficiency in the technical skill of biomedical writing; (b) knowledge about contemporary approaches to and issues in biomedical communication; (c) knowledge about the history and culture of both biomedical research and patient care; and (d) an understanding of the social and environmental contexts within which epidemiological phenomena manifest themselves.

Biomedical Writing

ENGL 391 - Biomedical Writing 3 cr. or
ENGL 591 - Biomedical Writing 3 cr.

Technical Writing and Grammar

Take two of the following, depending on the biomedical writing adviser’s assessment of your strengths and weaknesses:

ENGL 248 - Introduction to Environmental and Science Writing 3 cr.
ENGL 254 - Introduction to Technical Writing 3 cr.
ENGL 342 - English Grammars 3 cr.
ENGL 347 - Grant and Proposal Writing 3 cr. or
ENGL 547 - Grant and Proposal Writing 3 cr.
ENGL 348 - Advanced Environmental and Science Writing 3 cr.
ENGL 354 - Advanced Scientific and Technical Writing 3 cr. or
ENGL 554 - Advanced Scientific and Technical Writing 3 cr.

Health Communication

COMM 382 - Health Communication 3 cr. or
COMM 582 - Health Communication 3 cr.

Medical Terminology

HS 295 - Medical Terminology 3 cr.

Health Care Professions Perspectives

Take one of the following:

Philosophical, Humanistic, and Sociological Perspectives on Medicine and Science

SOC 308 - Sociology of Medicine 3 cr.
SOC 508 - Sociology of Medicine 3 cr.

Statistics

Take one of the following:

MATH 355 - Elementary Statistical Methods 4 cr.
HS 301 - Fundamentals of Biostatistics 3 cr. (prereq HS 105 above)
PSYC 300 - Statistics for Psychologists 4 cr.
SOC 351 - Social Statistics 4 cr.

Writing Internship (Recommended)
