HIST 542 - Environmental History of Africa Description: Explore the interaction between nature and humanity in Africa from the pre-colonial period to the present. Special attention given to: the influence of disease and other environmental factors on the formation of African cultures; the development of African farming and its success in adapting to a variety of micro-environmental conditions; famine as a cause of the overseas slave trade, and the introduction of American crops as a consequence of it; the environmental impact of European colonialism; the impact of wildlife and soil conservation on 20th-century African and environmental change in postcolonial Africa, particularly in the recent period of economic globalization.
