Definitions:
Computer Information Systems (CIS) involves the design and maintenance of information systems that enable organizations to gather, process, store, and use information for planning, control, and operations. Emphasis is placed on the analysis, configuration, and programming, security, and database aspects of the design and implementation of a computerized business information system. The program and courses in computer information systems are administered by the Department of Computing and New Media Technologies.
Web Development (WD) takes a multidisciplinary approach to preparing graduates for roles in which they collaboratively study, design, and develop interactive products and services through a user-centered design process. Through user research, interaction design and prototyping, programming and evaluation, WD graduates have a direct impact on the usability and user experience of new software programs, websites, and devices. WD is unique in placing people, their needs, expectations, and use of technology at the center of its educational focus. This is important as information technology becomes more ingrained in everything people do so that we develop technology that is viable, usable, and pleasurable. The program and courses in Web Development are administered by the Department of Computing and New Media Technologies.
Academic Standards for Computer Information Systems Major
- Computer Information Systems and Math courses taken pass/fail do not count for the major.
- You may petition the department chair to accept coursework done at other institutions, but no more than one-half the Computer Information Systems credits applied to your major may be earned outside UW-Stevens Point. The department chair may allow exceptions.
- To maintain admitted status, you must maintain a GPA of at least 2.5 in all courses taken at UW-Stevens Point that count for the Computer Information Systems major.
- If you do not maintain a GPA of at least 2.5 in all courses taken at UW-Stevens Point that count for the Computer Information Systems major, you will be placed on Computer Information Systems probation and will have one semester to restore your GPA. If you fail to do so, you will be dropped from the major and the only Computer Information Systems courses for which you will be allowed to register are those required to complete the Computer Information Systems minor.
- If you are not admitted to the Computer Information Systems major, the only Computer Information Systems courses for which you will be allowed to register are those required to complete the Computer Information Systems minor.
- Admission to Computer Information Systems classes may be limited in any semester and may be determined in part by your Computer Information Systems GPA.
Academic Standards and Admission Procedures for Web Development Major
-
If you declare Web Development (WD) as your major, you are a “premajor” until you apply and are accepted into the major. Applications are processed in September and February each year. You should apply no later than the second semester of your sophomore year. Exceptions may be granted.
-
Before you can apply for admission to the Web Development major, you must complete CNMT 110 , CNMT 210 , WD 100 , and WD 201 . You must have a GPA in these courses of at least 2.5, including transfer credits, and regardless of any declaration of academic bankruptcy.
-
You may apply for admission to the Web Development major twice.
-
You may repeat a course in the major only if you follow the policy on repeating courses. If you repeat a course, only the most recent grade counts for the GPA.
