Definitions:
Athletic Trainers are health care professionals who provide physically active individuals services such as injury/illness prevention, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.

The Master of Science in Athletic Training (MS-AT)  degree is a professional athletic training program that prepares you for certification as an athletic trainer.

Accreditation: UW-Stevens Point MS-AT program is accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CaATe).

Academic Standards for Master of Science in Athletic Training

Admission to the Program: If you’re interested in applying for the MS-AT program, you must complete the following:

1. UW-Stevens Point application for graduate study.
2. Application to the MS-AT graduate program via ATCAS Central (www.caate.net/apply-now). The ATCAS application requires:

1. a written essay,
2. two letters of recommendation,
3. evidence of 50 hours of athletic training observation with a certified AT. Observation hours must be completed within the past 24 months prior to application,
4. a listing of complete or in-progress prerequisite coursework, and
5. completion of the Technical Standards Form for the MS-AT program.

3. TOEFL or IELT scores (international applicants only). Minimum of 80 or 7 respectively.
4. Official transcripts of all college work.
5. Attain a minimum GPA of 3.0 on all previous undergraduate and graduate coursework prior to application. If your GPA is under 3.0, you can still apply and request a review of your application.

Prerequisite courses for the MS-AT program are: biology, chemistry, physics, human anatomy, human physiology, exercise physiology, kinesiology, psychology, nutrition, introduction to athletic training, medical terminology, and statistics. Specific UWSP equivalents and required credits can be found on the website at www.uwsp.edu/msat.

Additional Notes about Applying to the Master of Science - Athletic Training (MS-AT):

1. Application deadline: Application deadlines for early admission and the regular decision cycle are published on the MS-AT website at www.uwsp.edu/msat
2. Qualified applicants will be contacted by the AT Admission Committee upon receipt of completed application. Meeting or exceeding the minimum requirements for eligibility to apply does not guarantee acceptance into the MS-AT.

Upon Acceptance to the Master of Science - Athletic Training (MS-AT), you must:

1. Provide verification of current physical examination by an approved health care provider (MD, DO, PA, CNP) confirming you meet the physical and mental abilities required of an athletic trainer.
2. Provide current records of: immunization history (including MMR, Hepatitis B, Varicella, adult dTap); tuberculosis (TB) test within the past 12 months.
3. Provide documentation of annual TB test updates.
4. Obtain antibody titers and/or influenza vaccine depending on requirements of assigned clinical sites.
5. Complete a healthcare provider background check as required by regulations in Wisconsin Administrative Code Chapter HFS 12.
6. Supply verification of personal healthcare provider liability insurance.
7. Submit all health-related documentations/verifications to the Clinical Education Coordinator prior to the start of each semester.

Retention, Master of Science -Athletic Training (MS-AT)

In order to maintain good standing within the MS-AT, you must:

1. Maintain a 3.0 GPA in major.
2. Maintain 3.0 average evaluation score (4-point scale) on clinical evaluation. If you fail to meet either criteria listed above, you will be on academic probation in the MS-AT for one semester. If you do not attain the retention criteria during the probation semester, you may not continue in the major. You are only allowed one probationary semester during your time in the MS-AT.

Notes for Master of Science -Athletic Training (MS-AT) Students

1. All requirements for the AT program must be complete, or in the process of being completed, before the program director will endorse your application for the Board of Certification examination.
2. All students in the MS-AT are responsible for arranging travel to off-site clinical rotations. You will also be responsible for the cost of travel. There will also be some additional expenses incurred for uniforms and learning resources.
3. Updated information will be provided in the Athletic Training Educational Handbook and the program website.
4. If you are denied acceptance into the program, you may contact the assistant dean of the School of Health Sciences and Wellness for appeal procedures. Appeals are handled by the School of Health Sciences and Wellness Appeals Committee.

CHILD LIFE SPECIALIST PREPARATION GRADUATE CERTIFICATE

Description: The Child Life Specialist Preparation Graduate Certificate  is ideal for those seeking to become certified as Child Life Specialists and complete the academic preparation portion of their training. Using the national Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP) academic eligibility requirements as a guide, this certificate encompasses six of the 10 required course content areas. Each of the courses in our program have been pre-approved by ACLP helping to expedite child life course verification as part of the eligibility assessment requirements needed to qualify to sit for the national examination.

This certificate by itself does not qualify participants to work or identify themselves as a Certified Child Life Specialist, It is designed to assist in meeting the mandatory academic requirements designated by ACLP. Additional requirements are needed such as courses in four additional content areas (Human Anatomy, Medical Terminology, Ethics, Research), volunteer hours in and out of medical settings, practicum(s), internship(s), and completion of the national exam. The UW-Stevens Point School of Health Sciences and Wellness Program in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) has developed a joint clinical doctorate in audiology (Au.D.)  program with the UW-Madison Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. Our universities have merged their resources to provide a unique professional doctorate program. The joint doctoral program in audiology at UW-Madison and UW-Stevens Point is accredited by the CAA of ASHA.

The faculty and staff in the School of Health Sciences and Wellness Program in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) provide you with a high quality education that emphasizes training in the prevention, evaluation, and treatment of disorders of hearing, speech, language, and swallowing. Graduates are employed throughout the country in schools, universities, hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and private/public clinics.

Clinical training begins at the undergraduate level and culminates with a full-time clinical externship at the end of the graduate program. In consultation with the director of Clinical Services, you will select a site for your externship. If you are in the audiology program, you will complete a full-time clinical externship during the entire fourth year of study. In the speech-language pathology program, you will complete a full-time 15-20 week externship in a school, health care facility, or clinic setting during the final semester of your program.

Health Sciences and Wellness offers a Master’s of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology . You will receive the academic background and clinical practicum experience required to function competently and independently in a variety of professional employment settings. This program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA). Admission to the Program - Communication Sciences and Disorders Graduate

Contact the coordinator of graduate programs for specific information about the application process for both the speech-language pathology and audiology programs. For both programs you will need the following to be considered for admission:

1. A completed application for admission to the program,
2. A statement of professional intentions (i.e., interest and goals),
3. Three letters of recommendation,
4. GRE scores,
5. A completed practicum and work experience form,
6. A completed undergraduate major in communicative disorders or equivalent coursework.

Admission to Candidacy for Communication Sciences and Disorders Graduate Program

You must complete at least 9 credits of graduate work with a GPA of 3.00 (B). See the Graduate Handbook in Speech-Language Pathology or the University of Wisconsin Professional Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) Degree Student Handbook for details regarding candidacy.

In either specialization you must meet minimum standards for clinical certification as established by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association that are in effect at the time you graduate.

Admission to Candidacy for Community & Organizational Leadership, M.S. - Graduate Program

Admission to candidacy (program planning) does not occur until after you have applied and are accepted into the Community & Organizational graduate program at UW-Stevens Point. Once admitted, you will consult with your adviser to prepare a proposed program of study. Acceptance as a candidate occurs when your graduate committee has approved your Program of Study.

To be accepted as a candidate:

1. Complete no more than 9 credits of graduate work from UW-Stevens Point. Transfer credits may apply toward completion of your degree, but they are not included in consideration for admission to candidacy. You may apply earlier, but you should be admitted to the program and meet with your adviser before you have completed 9 graduate credits.
2. Remove any academic deficiencies and/or complete all subject matter prerequisites.

Description: The Graduate Teaching Certification in Family and Consumer Sciences  provides opportunities for licensed teachers to add a new license in the area of family and consumer sciences (FCS). Description: The Health and Wellness Coaching Graduate Certificate  teaches competencies needed to help clients make and maintain healthy changes. The program is designed with busy professionals in mind. It is comprised of four courses offered 100% online via a mix of scheduled live interactive classes and independent learning modules. The program can be taken for continuing education credits (CECs) and/or for graduate credit. Both options meet the standards of the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NHWC) and prepare you to sit for the NBHWC certification exam. The MS-HCA  prepares patient-care professionals, health administrators, or management professionals to better accomplish the triple aim of improving access to care, impacting the quality of care, and reducing the overall cost of care in a variety of healthcare settings by increased skills in workforce recruitment and retention, financial management, organizational development, health law and policy, population health, and communication.

The fully online media-rich MS-HCA curriculum was developed by faculty at five partner campuses: UW-LaCrosse, UW-Parkside, UW-Platteville, UW-Stevens Point, and UW-Stout. Instruction may originate from any of these universities to utilize the academic strengths of the partner institutions.
