The Language Study Interdisciplinary Certificate allows you to learn about the human capability for language from a variety of perspectives. These include language as an integrated system of rules (linguistics) as the result of specific cognitive processes (psychology), as a communicative pathology to be remediated (Communication Sciences and Disorders), and as a practical key into another linguistic world (World Languages). This certificate provides a solid foundation for students wishing to pursue graduate study in language-related fields such as linguistics, rhetoric, psychology, sociology, philosophy, communication, and foreign languages.

The Language Study Interdisciplinary Certificate satisfies the Interdisciplinary Studies GEP requirement. For more information, see the GEP section of the catalog.

World Language Study or equivalent, 8 credits

Two semesters of college level world language study or the equivalent.

Linguistics, 3 credits

ENGL 240 - Introduction to Linguistics 3 cr.

Scientific, Humanistic, or Social Science Perspective, 9 credits

Choose three courses for a total of 9 credits from the following areas. At least 3 credits must be from Scientific Perspective or Humanistic Perspective, and 3 credits from Social Science Perspective:

Scientific Perspective

CSD 260 - Phonetics 3 cr.
CSD 266 - Normal Language Development 3 cr.
FREN 420 - Phonetics and Phonology (formerly 320) 3 cr.
GERM 420 - Phonetics and Phonology (formerly 320) 3 cr.
PHIL 322 - Symbolic Logic 3 cr.
SPAN 420 - Phonetics and Phonology (formerly 320) 3 cr.

Humanistic Perspective

CSD 342 - Basic Manual Communication 2 cr.
ENGL 342 - English Grammars 3 cr.
ENGL 344 - History of the English Language 3 cr.
ENGL 346 - Old English 3 cr.
ENGL 379 - Rhetorical Theory 3 cr.

Social Science Perspective

Capstone Project, 1 credit

Project to be completed in or after the semester in which the coursework described above is completed.
