The Special Educational Needs Minor for Teachers consists of 31-37 credits.

Professional Education

Complete a major certification program in education which includes:

EDUC 309 - Methods/Materials for Teaching Reading II 3 cr. and/or
EDUC 386 - Literacy in the Secondary School 3 cr. (see adviser)
EDUC 351 - Educating Students with Special or Other Needs in the General Education Environment 3 cr.
EDUC 381 - Educational Psychology 2 cr.
EDUC 398 - Student Teaching 1-16 cr.
EDUC 400 - Student Teaching Seminar 1-2 cr.
HD 261 - Child Growth and Development 3 cr. or
HD 265 - Human Growth and Development: A Life-Span Approach 3 cr. or
PSYC 260 - Introduction to Developmental Psychology 3 cr.

Note

Certification grade levels depend on initial certification program and will include Cross-Categorical Special Education as well as the area of specialty.

General Special Education

EDUC 356 - Individual Assessment 3 cr.
EDUC 362 - Classroom Management Techniques and Strategies 3 cr.
EDUC 364 - Curriculum and Strategies for Students with Special Needs 3 cr.
EDUC 368 - Career, Vocational and Community Education for Youth with Disabilities 3 cr.
EDUC 378 - Parent, Home and Agency Involvement in Educating Children and Youth with Disabilities 3 cr.
EDUC 398 - Student Teaching 1-16 cr. (in certification area)
CSD 367 - Survey of Communication Disorders for Educators 3 cr.

Areas of Specialization

Complete one of the following areas of certification:

Emotional behavioral disabilities (EBD)

No additional coursework required.

Learning disabilities (LD)

EDUC 310 - Materials/Methods for Teaching Language Arts 3 cr.

Cognitive disabilities (CD)

No additional coursework required.

State-Mandated Tests

Pass the state-mandated content test and reading test.
