This major is administered by the Department of Music .
There are three majors in music education (Early Childhood through Adolescence): (1) instrumental; (2) choral; and (3) general music. When you major in one area, you can complete “add-on” certification requirements in the other two.
In addition, a noncertifiable area of emphasis is available in Suzuki talent education to complement the music education tracks.
Teacher Certification Note: Enrollment caps are in effect for those seeking teacher certification. Please contact the Music Department early for entrance requirements and application procedures. Also see the information about the Professional Education Program and the elementary and secondary education curricula for teacher certification in the Education section of this catalog. You must complete all requirements before you begin your student teaching/ internship semester.

Secondary/K-12 Education
Refer to the “Secondary/K-12 Education” portion of the Education section earlier in this catalog for information about admission to the Professional Education Program and teacher certification requirements. NOTE: To graduate with a comprehensive Music Education - General major, completion of all teacher certification requirements, including student teaching in Music Education - General, is required

MUED 400 satisfies the Capstone Experience requirement. MUED 201 , MUED 323 , and 200-level applied study (MUS 260 , MUS 261 , MUS 262 , MUS 263 , MUS 264 , MUS 265 , MUS 266 , MUS 267 , MUS 268 , MUS 269 , MUS 270 , MUS 271 , MUS 272 , MUS 273 , MUS 274 , MUS 275 , MUS 276 , MUS 277 , MUS 278 , MUS 281 ) will satisfy 5 credits of the Communication in the Major requirement.
Note
Take MUS 379 to satisfy 2 credits of the Communication in the Major requirement. Placement exam required. If insufficient background, MUS 109 is prerequisite.
Applied music (major), 10 credits
Complete 300 level of study in voice, piano, or another instrument. Perform in juried public performance at appropriate level.
Note
Complete MUS 247 if not a piano major. If placed in private piano study, complete Level 100 and MUS 247 .
Music literature, 15 credits
Large ensemble, 7 credits
Take at least 7 credits of large ensemble. Required every semester enrolled except student teaching (1 credit per semester). (See Note 3 .) Instrumental majors must complete 2 additional semesters of MUS 341 . Piano majors: 1 credit from MUS 328 (taken in lieu of large ensemble upon course offering).
Add-on certification areas
We recommend that voice or piano majors complete both choral (Early Childhood through Adolescence) and general music (Early Childhood through Adolescence) tracks. If you are an instrumental major, you may also wish to expand your certification areas. Consult your adviser.
Instrumental (Early Childhood through Adolescence)
Certification for choral or general majors.
Major applied band or orchestra instrument
Complete 200 level of study.
Instrumental methods, 10 credits
Music education, 4 credits
Advanced instrumental conducting, 2 credits
Large ensemble, 4 credits
Student teaching, 5 credits
Take at least 5 credits from:
Choral (Early Childhood through Adolescence)
Certification for instrumental or general majors.
Voice applied
Complete 200-level of study.
Large ensemble, 4 credits
Small vocal ensemble, 1 credit
Choral conducting, 2 credits
Vocal pedagogy, 2 credits
Student teaching, 5 credits
Take at least 5 credits from:
General music (Early Childhood through Adolescence)
Certification for instrumental or choral majors.
Voice applied
Complete 100-level of study if a choral major or MUS 150 and voice evaluation if an instrumental major.
Large ensemble, 2 semesters
General Music Methods, 2 credits
Additional music history, 3 credits
