Graduate Certification Programs in Reading: Reading Specialist (17) Certification

This certificate is administered by the School of Education Office of Graduate Studies & Professional Development .
You may complete this certification as a specialization in the Education, M.S.E. via Option B or by enrolling as a graduate special student and pursuing certification only.
NOTE: You must have three years of successful regular classroom teaching experience in addition to the coursework for certification.

Certification Requirements
Master’s Degree
Complete a master’s degree in an education field.
Note:
Courses for reading specialist 17 license must be earned within a seven-year period (starting with beginning of the term the course was approved for your Program of Study).
State Mandated Tests
Pass the state-mandated Foundations of Reading Test.
State Teacher Licensing Rules
Meet state teacher licensing rules which are subject to change at any time due to legislative or licensing changes.
Early Childhood Education Add-On
To receive certification, fulfill these requirements:
Professional Preparation
Complete a bachelor’s degree and/or certification program with a major in Elementary Education including EDUC 398 ; and PSYC 260 or HD 261 or HD 265 .
Student Teaching in Pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten
State-Mandated Tests
Pass the state-mandated Foundations of Reading Test. Teachers who have a Wisconsin “lifetime license” are not required to meet this requirement unless they have an administrative license that is not a lifetime license.
