Program Learning Outcomes

The Music Program Learning Outcomes are: 

  1. As a Music student, you will be able to perform at appropriate levels for professional engagement
  2. You will demonstrate the disposition to cultivate a career in music. They will demonstrate an ongoing commitment to your own learning while maintaining high standards of professionalism
  3. You will be able to analyze, create, and interpret music and use this knowledge to enrich your work as a musician
  4. You will be able to classify and contextualize repertoire from diverse eras and traditions
  5. You will be able to employ critical thinking and self-reflection in the thoughtful and strategic planning, instruction, and assessment in music pedagogy. Your teaching will demonstrate a mastery of content knowledge and consider context, standards, essential questions, enduring understandings, and meaningful objectives and assessments

NOTE: To graduate with a comprehensive Music Education degree, completion of all teacher certification requirements, including student teaching in general music and an ensemble setting is required.
 

Consists of 89 credits.

Applied music (major), 14 credits


Complete 300 level of study in voice, piano, or another instrument. Perform in juried public performance at appropriate level.

Music literature, 9 credits


Conducting, 3 credits


Group Piano, 6 credits


Large Ensemble, 7 credits


Take at least 7 credits of large ensemble on your major applied instrument (piano applied majors can choose a choir or instrumental ensembles). Required every semester enrolled except student teaching (1 credit per semester). (See Note 3 .) Piano majors: 1 credit from MUS 328  (taken in lieu of large ensemble upon course offering).

Complete one of the two following:


In addition, complete one of the two following elective banks which also each comprise the Certificate in Choral Music Teaching OR the Certificate in Instrumental Music Teaching in order to complete the B.M. in Music Education. You may elect to complete both, but completion of track that corresponds with your major instrument is required.
