Communication: Professional Communication Emphasis, BS


This major is administered by the area of Communication  in the School of Design and Communication .

In professional communication you complete core courses and electives from public relations and workplace communication. Complementary electives from arts management, business, and media studies may be used to complete major requirements. Upon completing major requirements, you will be prepared to work in a wide variety of organizations and business-related professions.

Program Learning Outcomes

As a graduate of the Professional Communication Program, you will be able to:

  1. Use information about best practices, appropriate theories, and research to identify, analyze, and understand communication problems
  2. Strategically design messages (content) to build mutual understanding and improve communication with target audiences
  3. Effectively communicate messages to audiences using appropriate format and media         
  4. Use audience feedback and research to assess and improve the impact of messages
  5. Act with integrity in all phases of the professional communication process


Successfully complete a minimum of 37 credits in Required and Elective coursework as described below.

Note: Required courses marked ** below have Math prerequisites. Depending on your placement score, additional courses may be required.
