Program Requirements

You must complete the Reading Teacher (316) certification before completing the Reading Specialist (17) certification program.
You must have a teacher license in another teaching area as determined by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to enroll in this program.
You must have three years of successful regular classroom teaching experience in addition to coursework for certification.
You must have completed a master’s degree in an education field.
If you are seeking an initial administrative license (Reading Specialist is considered Administrative in the state of Wisconsin) then you must pass the state-mandated Foundations of Reading Test with a score of 240.
Per DPI certification requirements you will need to complete a comprehensive reading portfolio to evidence proficiency in the Wisconsin Administrative Standards.
You must meet the state teacher licensing rules which are subject to change at any time due to legislative or licensing changes.

Pathways

This Reading Specialist certification can be completed as a specialization in the Education, MSE program, and if you are pursuing this pathway, you will enroll as a degree seeking student.
This Reading Specialist certification can be taken as certification only, and if you are pursuing this pathway, you will enroll as a non-degree seeking student.

All of these courses must be earned within a seven-year period (starting with the beginning of the term the course was approved for your program of study).
