This major is administered by the area of Graphic Design in the School of Design and Communication .
The Graphic Design, BFA is the recognized professional degree for designers. The array of scaffolded Graphic Design courses and a variety of elective options in creative disciplines prepare you for employment in a wide range of design occupations. Supported by the university’s General Education Program and a robust set of creative core Foundations classes, the Graphic Design, BFA offers an outstanding education in design, challenging you to discover your strengths and identify career path options. Faculty work with you throughout the program to assist in reaching your professional goals.
Program Learning Outcomes
As a graduate of the Graphic Design, BFA you will be able to:
- TECHNICAL SKILLS: Create high quality design solutions using tools and best practices to match current industry professional standards
- DESIGN RESEARCH: Apply Investigation techniques that inform appropriate design decisions
- CULTURAL & SOCIAL AWARENESS: Demonstrate culturally informed visual communication solutions
- INDUSTRY UNDERSTANDING: Demonstrate a knowledge of the design industry and its professional expectations
- CREATIVITY: Demonstrate an ability to engage in design processes for communication/create using the design process
Consists of a minimum of 78 total credits in Art and Design and related disciplines; the distribution is as follows:
- 15 credits in Creative Core Foundation
- 15 credits in Studio Electives
- 12 credits in Art and Design History, Theory, Criticism
- 33 credits in Graphic Design Coursework
- 3 credits in Graphic Design Capstone

BFA Portfolio Review
BFA majors must also pass the BFA Portfolio Review, as specified (see BFA Portfolio Review section of this Catalog).
Art and Design History, Theory, Criticism, 12 credits
Take 9 credits as follows:
Take one Art History 300-level course:
Electives, 15 credits
Take 15 credits from the following courses:
At least 9 credits must have an ART designation.
Design Internship, 0 credits
BFA majors must pass the Design Internship, as specified (see Catalog description of procedures for Design Internship).
Alternately, you can elect to enroll in International Programs Internship.
