If you major in History you will learn essential skills in research, writing, and analysis. UWSP’s history program combines a strong liberal arts foundation with professional bridges that develop specific in-demand skill sets and dispositions, making our graduates especially competitive job applicants. If you are pursuing a career in history teaching you are encouraged to pursue the major in History and Social Studies Education.

Program Learning Outcomes

When you complete the major program in history you will be able to:

Identify, locate, interpret, and synthesize appropriate evidence to answer questions about the past
Analyze and evaluate the historiography of multiple regions and time periods
Present a coherent historical argument orally, visually, and in writing

Consists of a minimum of 42 credits, plus either completion of a certificate, minor, or other major OR at least one bridge to a professional career listed below.

Thematic Study, 24 credits

Complete 24 additional credits in history courses, not including HIST 300 , HIST 400 , or HIST 450 , with at least 21 credits at the 200-level or above and at least 15 credits at the 300-level or above.
