This major is administered by the Department of History and International Studies .
If you major in History, you will learn essential skills in research, writing, and analysis. UWSP’s history program combines a strong liberal arts foundation with professional bridges that develop specific in-demand skill sets and dispositions, making our graduates especially competitive job applicants. If you are pursuing a career in history teaching you are encouraged to pursue the major in History and Social Studies Education.
Program Learning Outcomes
When you complete the major program in history you will be able to:
- Identify, locate, interpret, and synthesize appropriate evidence to answer questions about the past
- Analyze and evaluate the historiography of multiple regions and time periods
- Present a coherent historical argument orally, visually, and in writing
Consists of a minimum of 36 credits, plus either completion of a certificate, minor, or other major OR at least one bridge to a professional career listed below.
Note: Required courses marked ** below have Math prerequisites. Depending on your placement score, additional courses may be required.

Thematic Study, 24 credits
Complete 24 additional credits in history courses, not including HIST 300 , HIST 400 , or HIST 450 , with at least 21 credits at the 200-level or above and at least 15 credits at the 300-level or above.
At least 6 credits must be from the global or non-U.S. regional courses listed below:

World Language Courses, 0-8 credits
Complete a two-semester sequence of university entry-level world language courses (101, 102). The requirement may be fulfilled through equivalent coursework or other language acquisition as demonstrated through a test-out policy (including Native American languages and American Sign Language). If your native language is not English and you can document formal high school or university study of your native language, you may use ENGL 101 and ENGL 202 , or ENGL 150 as a means of fulfilling this world language requirement.
