Native American and Indigenous Studies Certificate

This certificate is administered by the Department of History and International Studies .

The Native American and Indigenous Studies certificate helps prepare you to work effectively with sovereign Indigenous nations in career paths such as law, government, education, health care, resource management, journalism, and many others. If you are interested in pursuing the certificate, contact the program coordinator to plan a course of study that complements your major and career goals.

The certificate program consists of a minimum of 9 credits, including at least 3 credits at the 300-level or above:

Core courses

Choose 6-9 credits drawn from the following list, representing at least two different disciplines:

ENGL 280 - American Indian Literature Credits: 3
ENGL 382 - Ethnic Literature of the United States Credits: 3 (with appropriate subtitle)
ENGL 386 - Major Authors of Ethnic Literature Credits: 3 (with appropriate subtitle)
HIST 292 - Native American History Credits: 3
HIST 393 - Wisconsin Indians Credits: 3
PHIL 381 - American Indian Environmental Philosophies Credits: 3

Applied and Experimental Learning in Native Communities

Choose 0-3 credits drawn from:

NAIS 199 - Practicum in Native American and Indigenous Studies Credits: 1-12 (may be repeated for credit)
NAIS 399 - Special Work in Native American and Indigenous Studies Credits: 1-12 (may be repeated for credit)
NAIS 499 - Internship in Native American and Indigenous Studies Credits: 1-12 (may be repeated for credit)
Or other appropriate internship, employment, or course of study working with Native people and organizations (such as a culminating experience in the student’s major), with the approval of the program coordinator. In some cases this requirement may be fulfilled by a non-creditbearing (0 credit) learning opportunity. In all other cases at least 3 credits are required.

Note:

Other courses relevant to Native American and Indigenous Studies or to careers working with Native communities may count toward the certificate, with the approval of the program coordinator.
