Biology: Human and Animal Health Option, BS

This emphasis is administered by the Biology department.
Program Learning Outcomes
As a graduate with the Biology: Health Option, you will be able to:
- Recognize the multiple levels of complexity at which biological systems operate, from molecules to ecosystems and the biosphere, and explain the emergent properties and processes characteristic of each level
- Describe mechanisms for the continuity of life, including the processes of inheritance, development, and evolution
- Demonstrate proficiency in the methods and philosophy of science, including articulation and application of the Scientific Method, collection and analysis of biological data, and application of professional ethics
- Critically evaluate and synthesize biological information from multiple sources, including the primary scientific literature, and communicate biological knowledge to both professional and non-professional audiences
- Articulate the application of biological science to meeting the needs of society, including basic research, stewardship of biodiversity, human health, and entrepreneurial innovation
- Demonstrate broad knowledge in human and animal health
Consists of a minimum of 84 credits.
Minimum GPA = 3.0
Note: Required courses marked ** below have Math prerequisites. Depending on your placement score, additional courses may be required.

Required Biology Core and Collateral Courses (a minimum of 49 credits)
Note:
BIOL 385 is strongly advised for students interested in pursuing careers focused on Human health. Select schools require completion of physiology within three years of entering graduate programs.
Cellular and Molecular Biology Requirement
Note:
The combination of BIOL 314 and BIOL 320 also counts towards 5 of the required elective credits for this emphasis. BIOL 314 and BIOL 320 are strongly advised for students interested in pursuing a career in Human health.
Note:
CHEM 325 is strongly advised for students interested in pursuing a career in Human health other than a career as a Physician Assistant. Students are then also strongly advised to take CHEM 326 (see the emphasis-specific collateral course requirements) unless CHEM 221 and CHEM 222 are taken.
Note:
Students interested in pursuing a career in Human health or Veterinary Medicine other than a career as a Physician Assistant are strongly advised to complete both a course in statistics and a course in calculus.
Biology: Human and Animal Health Emphasis-Specific Core and Collateral Course Requirements (a minimum of 35 credits)
Notes:
- BIOL 333 is strongly advised for students interested in pursuing a career in Chiropractic medicine, and as a Physician Assistant.
- BIOL 387 is strongly advised for students interested in pursuing a career in human health. Select schools require completion of anatomy within three years of entering graduate programs.

Additional electives, including other sections of BIOL 498 or BIOL 499 , may be possible as recommended by your major adviser.
Emphasis-Specific Required Collateral Courses
Note:
CHEM 365 and CHEM 366 are strongly advised for students interested in pursuing a career in Human health other than a career as a Physician Assistant. CHEM 260 may still require CHEM 326 depending upon which organic chemistry requirement was taken.
Note:
ENGL 365 or ENGL 391 is strongly advised for students intending to enroll in select medical programs.
