This major is administered by the area of Interior Architecture in the School of Design and Communication .
Program Learning Outcomes
As a graduate of the Interior Architecture, BFA you will be able to:
- Design Process:
- Demonstrate a masterful design process pertaining to a particular design challenge
- Use various methods of concept generation, creative thinking, testing, evaluating, and synthesizing information from research
- Describe aesthetic, functional, and environment-behavior aspects relevant to a complex spatial problem and apply them in the design solution in a comprehensive manner
- Demonstrate a sound knowledge and design application of sustainable systems, building codes and standards to the built environment
- Generate a cohesive set of design communication materials through both visual and oral presentation
- Global and Cultural Perspectives:
- Demonstrate an ability to think critically about historical design and artifacts of non-Western cultures
- Identify non-Western historical art/design periods and styles and analyze the determinants that shape the historical design of non-Western cultures
- Apply a variety of ideas and non-Western worldviews by critically formulating reflective and informed aesthetic evaluations of non-Western historical design/artifacts
- Demonstrate an ability to think critically about historical architectural design purpose, practice and profession with an emphasis on the emergence of the interior’s discipline
- Identify historical architectural art and design periods and styles and analyze the determinants that shape them within Western cultures
- Apply a variety of design philosophies and worldviews by critically formulating reflective and informed aesthetic evaluations of historical and contemporary design artifacts and examples
- Recognize the timeless links between human culture and design communication, technology, methodologies, and practices
- Professional Practice:
- You will be able to illustrate and model ethical and professional behaviors
- Apply discipline-specific standards of oral and written communication to compose an articulate, grammatically correct, and organized presentation/piece of writing with properly documented and supported ideas, evidence, and information suitable to the topic, purpose, and audience
- Critique your own and others’ writing/oral presentations to provide effective and useful feedback to improve their communication
- Identify and illustrate creative and effective approaches to develop a portfolio format, theme, and content (Comprehension and Analysis)
- Assemble a professional dossier of design work and personal marketing materials (Synthesis)
- Develop and demonstrate an understanding of public perception and visual communication through a portfolio show (Application)
- Critique, analyze, and refine design work (Depth and Enhancement to studio projects)

Creative Core Foundation, 12 credits
Interior Architecture Design Core, 42 credits
Note
* You must have a laptop computer and approved computer-aided design (CAD) software before you begin IA 304 and IA 217 .
History and Theory of Architecture, Interior Design, and Art, 12 credits
Take 9 credits as follows:
Take 3 credits from the following art history courses:
Design-related Electives:
Choose from Interior Architecture and/or from select courses outside the IA major, with a significant relevance to the application of design including but not limited to: Art, Design, and Graphic Design.
With written approval from your IA faculty adviser and the IA Area Coordinator, you may take up to 3 of the 6 required credits from approved design-related courses in other disciplines.
