Program Requirements


  • You must have completed a bachelor’s degree. 
  • You must have a teacher license in another teaching area as determined by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to enroll in this program. 
  • You must have two years of successful regular classroom teaching experience in addition to coursework for certification.  
  • To receive certification, you must earn 9 prerequisite credits (6 from Area A and 3 from Area B) as described below and 13 credits from core courses. You can take them at the graduate or undergraduate level, but if you are applying these credits towards a master’s degree, they must be at the graduate level.  
  • You must pass the state-mandated Foundations of Reading Test. Teachers who have a Wisconsin “lifetime license” are not required to meet this requirement.  
  • Per DPI certification requirements, you will need to complete a comprehensive reading portfolio to evidence proficiency in the Wisconsin Teaching Standards.  
  • You must meet the state teacher licensing rules which are subject to change at any time due to legislative or licensing changes. 

Pathways


  1. This Reading Teacher certification can be completed as a specialization in the Education, MSE  program, and if you are pursuing this pathway, you will enroll as a degree seeking student.  
  2. This Reading Teacher certification can be taken as certification only, and if you are pursuing this pathway, you will enroll as a non-degree seeking student.
